State of the art marine biotechnology research

Technology transfer directly to beneficiary

National Centre for Aquatic Animal Health (NCAAH)

was established in January 18th 2000 to cater to the requirement of aqua farmers in protecting health of the rearing stock through the introduction of the recent advancements in marine biotechnology.

Motto of the Centre is Relentless effort for the protection of health of aquatic animals and their environment. To achieve the goal it continually endeavors to transfer the out put of research directly to the end users, the aqua farmers.

The research and development activities of the Centre use cutting edge technologies to bring in novel innovations for the development of sustainable aquaculture in India. A unique feature of the Centre is its in-house production facility, the Aquaculture Health Products Division to meet the needs of the aquaculture industry. Aquaculture extension cell is the link of the farmers to technology. Besides, the Centre maintains a diagnostic service to the diseases which often occurs during the culture.

The Centre offers an M.Tech. programme in Marine Biotechnology sponsored by Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. No where in the country such an unique facility is maintained, and it has to be stated that this component of NCAAH requires further expansion to cater to the disease diagnostic requirement in the culture of both edible and ornamental fishes. It has to be remembered that quick and accurate diagnosis of diseases leads to saving of valuable fish stock.

The Centre recently became the seventh Regional Resource Centre(RRC) in aquatic animal health of the Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia Pacific (NACA) which is head quartered at Bangkok, Thailand and the only one in India. As an RRC, the Centre is mandated to provide scientific and technical training of personnel’s from the South Asian Region, diagnostic Testing Facilities to countries who are members of the Regional Aquatic Animal Health initiative, organize scientific meetings, training courses and workshops for NACA, dissemination of Information and other such initiatives in aquatic animal health.

M.Tech. Marine Biotechnology

The M Tech programme in Marine Biotechnology sponsored and ranked as ‘A’ grade course by Department of Biotechnology, Government of India is a unique experience of its kind in the country.

Over above two decades, Government of India has been supporting infrastructure development and research in focused areas of Marine Biotechnology to develop novel processes and products aiming at enhancement
of industrial processes, biomedical material development, environment management etc. These efforts paved the way for the development of Marine Biotechnology Industry in the country harnessing the potential of the marine environment. The Department of Biotechnology, Government of India on taking stock of the situation realized that to infuse power to the sector effective human resource with high level technical expertise were the prime requirements. Realizing this requirement, National Centre for Aquatic Animal Health proposed the present M.Tech programme in Marine Biotechnology with the objective of generating the much needed specialized manpower in support of education, research and industrial development in Marine Biotechnology in India and abroad.

To satisfy this requirement, a curriculum was built in consultation with experts in the field. This is a four semester programme consisting of two semesters of intense theory, practical classes, assignments, problem analysis, short term projects and case studies with full time research during the third and fourth semesters. The programme has an Advisory Committee with Vice chancellor as the Chairman and members drawn from industry, academia and planners. Under the patronage of this Committee and with the state-of-the art infrastructure built in this Centre we look forward to generate manpower to transform the marine biotechnology education, research and industrial development in the country to a world class experience.

The course is also approved by AICTE.

Admission Procedure

National Centre for Aquatic Animal Health, School of Environmental Studies, Cochin University of Science and Technology offers an M.Tech. programme in Marine Biotechnology sponsored by Department of Biotechnology, Government of India under the National Network Programme in Human Resource Development in Biotechnology..Mode of selection will be based on the ranking obtained in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Biotechnology (GAT-B 2020), conducted by the Regional Centre for Biotechnology, Faridabad on behalf of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. This examination is to rank the eligibility of the candidate among all applicants, and the candidates will be given a GAT-B rank based on which they may apply for admission to M.Tech Marine biotechnology programme at NCAAH, CUSAT.

Who can apply

The candidates having minimum 60% marks or equivalent CGPA (under grading system) from any recognized university in B.Tech. or BE in Biotechnology/M.Sc in any branch of Life Science including Marine Biology are eligible to apply for GAT-B for admission to M.Tech. Marine Biotechnology programme.

Previous Students Experience

“Personally, I feel M.Tech Marine Biotechnology, here at NCAAH, is a very well-structured program with emphasis on real research-based teaching. The skills one develops during the extensive lab coursework will prepare you for all/any fields of Biotechnology”.

Ms. Neha Vijay Hulyalkar,
Graduate Student,
Dept of Molecular and Cellular Biology,
University of Texas at Dallas, USA.

“Two years, which I spend during my Masters in NCAAH, inspired me to delve deeper into research. Dedication of all faculty members and researchers in NCAAH towards science was always an inspiration. I believe scientific atmosphere, easy access of faculties for discussion, and precisely designed ‘M. Tech. Marine Biotechnology’ curriculum positively challenged my scientific abilities and helped to shape my career.”.
