RNAi of STAT gene to protect the shrimp from WSSV infection

In shrimp aquaculture, the main pathogen is white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), which cause collapse of the culture within 3-10 days post infection. As part of controlling this virus, WSSV entry pathway inside the host can be targeted. Signal transducers and activators of transcription (STATs) are a family of latent cytoplasmic transcription factors that comprise seven members in mammals. Upon activation by tyrosine phosphorylation, STATs can dimerize and translocate into the nucleus where they bind to their cognate DNA response elements and trigger gene transcription. In mammals, STATs are usually the common target of viruses. Previous studies have shown that WSSV can induce shrimp STAT activation to facilitate the transcription of the viral gene ie1, suggesting that the activated STAT was conducive to WSSV infection. In our study we are focusing on utilizing RNAi of STAT gene to inhibit the replication of WSSV.
